Tucked away in the heart of Brooklyn at 320 Atlantic Avenue, French Louie presents a refined yet approachable take on classic French cuisine. This charming bistro combines the rustic warmth of a Parisian neighborhood spot with the vibrant energy of New York’s culinary scene. From the first bite, it’s clear that the kitchen pays meticulous attention to tradition and quality.
The star attraction, undoubtedly, is the steak frites. Whether you opt for the 28-day dry-aged steak paired with rich maitre d'hôtel butter or the more affordable Bavette steak, each cut is tender, flavorful, and perfectly complemented by crisp, golden fries. The accompanying sides-crispy artichokes seasoned with za’atar and lemon tahini, or roasted cabbage glazed with brown butter and topped with crunchy breadcrumbs-offer delightful textures and bold Mediterranean influences that elevate the meal beyond expected bistro fare.
French Louie’s Les Soccas-a creative spin on chickpea flatbreads-stand out for their inventive use of seasonal ingredients. The heirloom beet socca, with its earthy sweetness and tangy lemon yogurt, and the salade niçoise socca featuring rare tuna and soft boiled egg, reveal a dedication to balance and freshness. These dishes celebrate the humble chickpea flour pancake in ways that feel both new and very familiar.
Dining here is not just about the food but the atmosphere. The back patio, softly shaded under an awning and dotted with tables bathed in sunlight, creates a relaxed outdoor retreat, perfect for savoring a leisurely lunch or an intimate date night. Inside, the modern-bistro décor with leather banquettes and subtle rustic touches strikes a careful balance between elegance and comfort, although tables can feel a bit close during busier service.
What resonates most is the authenticity and warmth found in French Louie’s dishes and service. Highlights like the escargot elevated by a piece of French sausage or the fresh grilled dorade capture the essence of French cooking-simple ingredients, expertly prepared, bursting with flavor. Even the humble lentil soup, praised by patrons, exemplifies how care and precision turn everyday meals into memorable experiences.
French Louie is an essential destination for those craving true French flavors amid Brooklyn’s bustling food landscape. It’s a place where tradition meets spirited innovation, and every plate tells a story of craftsmanship and passion.

Came for lunch on a date! It’s a cute and elevated spot. Get the Trout Po’ Boy- you won’t regret it. The dressing on it is so delicious, I’d love to know how they make it. The French bread is thick so if you’re looking for a lighter meal, then maybe skip. They have a very nice outdoor patio in the back! Very nice to sit under the sky / in the sunlight, but there are only 2 tables in the direct sun. The other “backyard” seating is actually under a big awning.

Incredible!!! The lentil soup was amazing and the French fries are almost better than in France. A must when you are in Brooklyn. Thank you!

Joined for dinner on a Thursday night. The restaurant has a modern-bistro sensibility with subtle rustic touches and a nice balance between elegance and comfortable warmth. We sat in the back section of the main dining area with the leather banquettes. Tables did feel too cramped, and the it wasn’t a busy night but it would be difficult to get out from your seat on a busy one. Service was okay, not the most friendly and warm. Food was very good. The escargot was delicious, the piece of sausage added to each shell elevates the flavor. The grilled whole dorade was very fresh, meat was tender with a subtle sweetness. But the charred broccolini was very bitter for some reason. House steak was okay. Would love to try the lamb next time. Overall a cute bistro with great food.

My wife and I took our son out to dinner Wednesday night at French Louie-his recommendation-and we had a wonderful evening. Our server, Jason, was fantastic. He patiently answered all of our questions while we decided what to order and was attentive throughout the meal, regularly checking in to make sure everything was perfect. Even as the restaurant quickly filled up, we never once felt rushed or pressured. The steak frites and the moules were absolutely divine. Overall, it was a lovely dining experience, and we’re already looking forward to coming back.

Had a spontaneous date night here and it turned out to be the perfect spot. The food was great and I especially appreciated the portions considering the affordable price point. The highlight for me were the fried artichokes, they were so delicious and memorable and so was the salad verte!

Had high expectations; felt the food is decent. Reasonably busy during a weekday lunch, with seats available. Steak tartare - quite good. Liked the packed tartare and loose yolk combination. Could do with a tiny bit more salt. Baguette was quite hard. Burger - liked the skinny fries though they are a tiny bit on the mushy side. Burger patty is decent but I’ve had better. Service is okay. Portions are also good for the price.

If when dining out your priority is service, then this might just be your new favorite restaurant. They have truly nailed the balance between being attentive but not overbearing, which is not something a lot of restaurants can claim. As for the food, most things where a 9 or 10. I did come very excited for the steak tartare, as it’s one of my favorite meals, and maybe my hopes were too high but it left something to be desired. It wasn’t bad by any means, it just wasn’t great. The steak frites, on the other hand, are worth every penny. Don’t sleep on the dessert, the banana profiteroles were absolutely mental, would go back just for that. Additionally, they have a very beautiful patio, which I didn’t sit in because it was sweltering the day I went.
